Academic mentoring & coaching
Many times, people arrive under-prepared for the demands of the academy (master’s or doctoral study) and may receive little guidance on how to move forward. However, at other times, there is a tangible lack of support and resources for the inevitable challenges that arise during the pursuit of a doctoral degree.
I have been in this situation and experienced it firsthand. I am committed to helping others (particularly those with marginalized identities) to overcome their challenges and succeed in this complicated environment. There are times when we need a bit of assistance, preferably from a person with the knowledge, skills, and awareness to help us to succeed. As a highly experienced educator with a PhD in Teaching and Curriculum, global experience, and a unique perspective, I can offer support and guidance in a variety of arenas to help you engage actively with your dreams.
Mentoring
I offer targeted support to address the many difficulties clients may be facing; personal or professional, conflicts with professors, understanding feedback, finding valuable resources, developing academic reading and writing skills, dealing with academic politics, negotiating the research process, and helping to hold clients accountable for making progress.
Coaching
Academic coaching meetings can help you move forward towards your goals. This is slightly different from mentoring, as it is focused on meeting goals and finishing your thesis, dissertation, (or article) in a timely fashion. This is about coaching to completion. I offer a series of 3 or 6 sessions to help you in your academic endeavors. I am here to help you achieve your dreams. I am here to help you climb that mountain.
Here are some examples of the services that I offer:
-
Deciphering faculty feedback
-
Developing doctoral level writing skills, refining and organizing research and ideas
-
Offering curated resources targeted to support your needs and goals
-
Motivational support and accountability (writing goals, SMART approaches, and schedules)
-
Offering a hand up the mountain AND a shoulder to cry on, depending on your needs and interests, as well as unique strategies to help you move forward.

Mentoring for everyday audiences
-
Brainstorming, idea-generation
-
Setting SMART goals (and achieving them!)
-
Challenging self-doubt and digging into your writing
-
Developmental writing support (plot, structure, characters, narrative arc)
